George Washington seniors collect caps and gowns

A prerecorded virtual graduation ceremony for the school will take place June 11.

George Washington High School students have returned to the school for the final time this school year to collect their belongings and pick up their caps and gowns. Though a traditional graduation ceremony isn’t in the cards this year, the mood has still been joyous, said community school coordinator Caitlyn Boyle.

“Having their caps and gowns makes it very tangible and makes it feel very real,” she said.

A prerecorded online ceremony will be hosted June 11 with a lineup of speakers with quick messages, including some surprises for students and families, Boyle teased.

Principal Sue Thompson has a message of encouragement for graduating students.

“The past few months have been difficult for many of us, but if there is any group of students that I believed would come out on the other end of this stronger and more resilient, it is you,” she said.

“You will change the world and make it a better place for the future,” she said.

In addition to their belongings, students were given a sign on behalf of the school, the School District of Philadelphia and Office of Children and Families. ••
